THE CHALLENGE

How might we make low-income urban areas safer and more empowering for women and girls?

This was the challenge proposed by Open IDEO and the topic of my thesis of my Bachelor Degree in Industrial Desing Engineering and Product Development in Zaragoza's University (Spain).
During 2 months, I analyzed the different problems that women have to face in their daily life and I decided to apply my solution to the urban space and the leisure time.

I created a brand called SUMA IDEAS which represents an urban space where women develop their social skills and feel safe in the city, enhances the empowerment of women in low-income urban areas, such as El Gancho neighborhood in Zaragoza.

CONCLUSIONS

I designed a product line of urban furniture thanks to a creative workshop that I led with women and children in the neighborhood with a clear objetive: to find the real needs of real women that would use the urban space. In the workshop these women and their children were very active. They learned basic techniques of creativity and the workshop empowered them because they were able to give their opinion, show their needs and meet with other women.
